BomberLéo & friends

I met BomberLeo for the first time when she performed for Rob Warren’s CD launch event at Betty,TOO!. Since then, she had played a couple of times for us (one at the time of Cannabis Cup 2010 and another for a leaving party for her friend) before she passed by one day to say that she wanted to host a series of regular acoustic music nights. I was pleasantly surprised to hear that she thought the upstairs space at Betty was ideal for her plans. I was thinking that the space was too small for any live music event and the audio equipment that we have was pretty basic. However BomberLeo said that the size was perfect for an intimate atmosphere and there was also no need for many equipments. She said that she wanted to get together with a couple of artists, including experienced ones and the not-so-experienced and emphasis was on connection amongst the artist as well as that between the artists and the audience. Clearly it was not a simple open-mic that BomberLeo wanted.

We as the team Betty also wanted to contribute whatever we could do to make this project a bit special for all of us and thought it would be a perfect opportunity for us to find a way to work together for something bigger. Say, BomberLeo, a long-standing artist from Amsterdam knows a circle of great artists and other people who appreciate the art and friendship. She holds the core spirit of the community. She can bring together a group or artists from different backgrounds but the same interests. Meanwhile, Betty’s resident DJ Kableguy has been passionate about promoting artists under creative commons lisence and already has experience of working with other artists and labels. He is also able to provide essential technical support in terms of setting up the venue, broadcasting and recording. And as a DJ, his always looking for a new piece of music. In addtion, other staff at Betty are open to new and alternative ideas and are supportive of those who understand what we stand for. Also, geographical spread of Betty has already found artists from other parts of the world who are willing to participate.

So Bomberleo, Kableguy and I had a chat hoping to find a direction to maximise all the potentials that we have as a team. It is an interesting experiment and requires enormous commitment from everyone over a period of time if we want some result. Well, it may all sound very dry and business-like but our conclusion was that certain things had to be done whilst it was pretty certain that everyone would be willing to contribute because we like to work together. I am confident that the gathering on this coming Thursday and future shows into the new year will be successful with many artists and audience making friends with each other and work together to promote great music with inspiration from BomberLeo. I really like the way the whole thing started very organically but the core members are pretty much driven and proactive instead of waiting and complaining.

Sorry I wanted to write about initial planning and the idea behind ‘Bomberleo & Friends’ this time but it may sound very dry and boring for an article on an innovative art event…Then come join us and you know the end product is exceptionally creative. The standard of performance is already so high that my secret dream of making a debut as a singer in one of the sessions is already tarnished.

Some of the plugins are very useful, but sometimes when you want to upgrade them they fail.
The calendar plugin was such a candidate and for that reason we deactivated it for the moment until we find another solution.

We will continue updating the pages for Best of Bandcamp and Music Message. All other events will be mentioned on the main page.

A Beacon of Rebirth Poster Project

Until recently, I was living in an apartment where my landlady and landlord were hanging pictures of children from some poor countries and I didn’ t particularly like the idea of someone sending me a strong educational message as I went up the stairs of my own home, where I just wanted to sit back and relax and not think about all the problems somewhere else in the world.

However, I’m now doing exactly the same by hanging several posters which I got shipped from Japan. They feature residents of the areas worst hit by recent earthquakes and tsunami. I already hear in my head criticism that a coffeshop is a place where you have a coffee and look at beautiful decorations, not the pictures of people in working clothes trying to clear the wreckage. I am aware that it may come across as self-indulgent but could not help it.

All the posters say in Japanese language ‘We hope you are getting on with your lives wherever you are. That gives us energy to carry on. Then each poster has a different slogan, reflecting different but similarly difficult situation that the model of the poster is in. However, at the same time, these slogans also show strong determination and positive attitudes of all the people in the posters.

At the beginning, it seemed to me almost hypocritical that all the posters had such positive messages (apart from the one with a boy saying ‘oh god i wish i could play baseball now’) but later began to think that, if anyone wanted to survive, s/he has to convince her/himself that s/he could make it before committing suicide. It must have been an extraordinary journey to come to the determination after having everything destroyed, nearly dying, or losing loved ones and I’m so moved that people had power to come back to work so quickly.

We actually all go through similar journeys of losing hope, being down, but not wanting to give up and coming back up even though the journeys may not be as dramatic as losing everything in tsunami. Coffeeshops like Betty often become venues where people discuss their ups and downs. We get to hear moving stories from people who come to the shop and open their hearts to us. We share a lot, try to cheer up each other, sometimes with success, sometimes in vain.

The posters have certainly given me lots of inspirations and hints and made me feel more grateful for so many things that I have. That’ s why I wanted you to see the posters and tell me what you  may think. The first impression that you will get from the images will be a very sad one, I guess. However, I hope you will feel something different after a while. What happened over there in Japan has been bad enough but if anything nice could come out at all, it will only be that many of us realise that we can inspire each other by living our lives to the fullest rather than moaning all the time.

In the past, I had many requests to bring in more Japanese themed things to Betty but I never got around to do so. One main reasons was that, the Japanese theme requested did not quite match the image of the country I had myself. To be more precise and bold, I had slight problem with pretending that Japan is a mere high-tech wonderland or a geisha boudoir. They would have been perfect as themes for a coffeeshop and whoever suggested them to me had much better commercial sense than I but I failed to emotionally detach myself from my homeland as well as from my business.

I imagine some people will be surprised with the Japanese theme that I have now brought in. However I am proud of the people who are working on this poster projects and am hopeful that the posters will hopefully show something very uniquely Japanese and at the same time something universally beautiful (although maybe a bit complicated beauty).

Finally, going back to the beginning of the story, I now have a good guess of why my landlord and landlady hang those pictures at home. I always loved the couple anyway and I’m happy that I met them.

Using the tram in Amsterdam?

I have found a easy guide to Amsterdam public transport for tourists.
Fun guide through Amsterdam is a rather young blog, with lots of tips for the (smoking) tourist. Make sure you check it frequently for tips about Amsterdam!

Wietpas

Since the end of the last year, we have had many queries from friends all over the world on possible restriction on our business. Sorry, but I have to confess that I have not been studying hard enough so that I can tell you exactly what’ s going on within the current Dutch government in relation to possible implementation of so called ‘Wietpas’. I will list some links from respectable organizations so that you can keep yourselves up-to-date if you want (If you are not familiar with the Dutch language, make use of googletranslate like I do). The following is to my best knowledge of what’s going on and what I think about it.

Various media first reported late last year that the current Dutch CENTRAL government planned to introduce so called ‘Wietpas (Weed pass)’. The media explained that, for example, you would need a pass to make a purchase in our shop and more importantly, in order to obtain this pass, you have to be a Dutch resident.

This means that people visiting Amsterdam from outside the country will not be able to come to our shops and many others to experience the unique culture.  This also naturally means that, any businesses in Holland which currently benefit from tourism (including hotels, souvenir shops, transports and the rest you name it), will suffer because of the potential significant decrease in number of people visiting the country.

In the past, the central governments have tried to restrict our business in different ways but none of the attempts have had significant impacts, not at least in Amsterdam. However this time, we were more concerned because the government managed reach wider audience with tougher messages via media (although, we, as the business owners have never heard from them directly so far). We started hearing from our friends across the globe asking what’ s going on while some Dutch media even reported that the government said that, if a pilot scheme in the south of Holland does not work well, they would shut down all the businesses across the country altogether.

So I was rather nervous when I first heard the news in December last year. I was thinking about my next possible careers including bar business combined with laundry and karaoke facilities. I also decided to join BCD, a lobby organization for our business community to obtain more direct and up-to-date information as they have been in close contact with Den Haag on various matters which concern our business community. I also thought that joining them might give me a better opportunity to have my voice heard rather than jumping up and down on facebook or on this blog page.

Meanwhile, the media started reporting that, quite a few LOCAL governments in Holland including those in the south started showing their oppositions. It is interesting that the local governments in the south of Holland have been amongst the first ones to voice their concerns over the implementation of the pass system because, as far as I understand, the system has been designed particularly to ‘protect’ these regions from those who come from outside Holland to make purchase and ‘disturb’ the local community. The local authorities in the area seem to see many other aspects to the thriving businesses including the positive ones.

In Amsterdam, the local government has not had a final say yet but as many parties including criminology specialists believe that the situation in Amsterdam is completely different as majority of tourists who come to enjoy the custom and culture are not interested in invading the city with big ambition of drug cmuggling. They come for the unique experience for a short period before returning to their respective country only with sweet memories.

It is my understanding that the CENTRAL government can push through their policy regardless of the stances of the LOCAL governments. Therefore numerous reports on the local governments’ s rejections to the concept of the pass system makes me optimistic but only cautiously. The central government has failed to deliver a more clear guidline by the end of the last month as they promised. Meanwhile, there have been discussions over various implications including legal ones as well as the financial ones that the implementation may have.

It therefore seems to me that, even if the current Dutch central government is to impose any sort of restriction, it will probably be long time ahead and meanwhile, we will carry on with our business as usual. Don’t worry that we may not exist anymore. Please come and visit us, have a good time and enjoy freedom with self-discipline and responsibility.

The current prime minister is reported to have said something like that he is fed up with coffeeshops which is a symbol of nostalgia for the 60′ s. I think the complete opposite. In principle, having some liscenced businesses is a forward-looking pragmatic solution for various problems which modern societies face and if you look at the developments in United States and other regions, it is possible to say that the Dutch system can be one of the more progressive ones and it is certainly not a retrospective yearning like the prime minister says . We now have an even stronger sense of mission to run our business to prove that. I hope you share the same thought and help us remain a part of great heritage of Amsterdam.
